Train to Lyon

View 2019 Paris - Provence - Barcelona on greatgrandmaR's travel map.

We woke reluctantly and dressed and went to breakfast. When we go through the garden, it is misted so it is cooler there. They have finally noticed that the door that everyone uses into where the buffet for breakfast is, has a step of about 2 inches which is difficult for me as I have to lift the scooter over it. There is another French door which is much easier. Of course this is our last day.

We went out into the lobby to wait for the bus which was a little late. Paris is all in a tizzy because of the heat - apparently when they had their last heat wave in 2003 it was blamed for 15,000 deaths. Some schools have closed.
From the bus

We got to the train station and we all got off and most of us followed a guide but Dragan and A and I went to where there was an elevator which first went down to a lower level and then we walked (well A walked) to another elevator and we went back up. Everyone else used an escalator. They gave us our tickets which said the train was TGV INOUI which would depart at 9:59 - we were Class 1, Voiture (car) 11 and Place assise (seats) 41 and 43. We were to find our car and sit in our assigned seats although we could move around after the train started.

Seats 41 and 43 proved to be a single seat on one side of the aisle (43) and a window seat on the other side with seat 42 in the middle. A man who was not in our group was in seat 42.

There were tray tables and there was wi-fi but no plugs to charge a computer or phone. There was a small overhead rack which A put the computer bag into, but the small roller bags which people had and the scooter had to be stacked at the end of the car.

The train was running over 200 km/hr and it was hard to take photos because of the speed and also the window was dirty and there were reflections from the windows on the other side. But the countryside was very picturesque with little villages and farmhouses and what looked to me like winter wheat (golden in color) and maybe corn. I did take some photos. I think we both slept a bit.

The train was very quiet running - it didn't make clacking noises when it went over a joint. One of the men said they must have used continuously welded track. I looked it up and they do have long sections of track - longer than normal. BUt I think it is the meticulous preparation of the rail bed which is the key.

We got to Lyon about noon, and went from the train to a bus. It was hot.

The arrangements were that we could have a cooking demonstration and/or walk around and have lunch in town and there would be a shuttle to the ship or we could walk to it. But it was just too hot for most of us and I was not going to be walking in the heat (plus I didn't think either of us would be good candidates for cooking) so very few of us got off the bus. I took some photos from the bus.

When we got to the room, I asked them to take a chair away. Without it I can come in and turn around where the chair was at the desk and then the scooter will be facing out for me to leave.

Our cabin is very nice - a little smaller than the one we had on AmaViola. Having the beds as twin beds makes one of them be up against the wall of the bathroom. Both beds have their OWN night table!! The night tables are small with a lamp a drawer and a shelf.

There is a nice picture/painting on the wall and a bureau with three drawers.

There are three doors to the closet and one of them has shelves. There are plenty of hangers. Because it is so hot, we keep the curtains drawn

The bathroom has a mirror on the door and there is a mirror on the wall over the sink with a cabinet behind it and there is a cabinet below the sink too. They brought me a shower chair.

We had a meeting to do the safety briefing, and then Dragan talked to us about the schedule.

I thought maybe I could walk from the room to the dining room, so I tried that and used the elevator. But they said the elevator would not go down to the dining room level so I had to use the steps. Then they seated us at a table for 6 but no one else came to sit with us - they were all in their own groups. That is one of the disadvantages cruising with a large group, if you are not part of the group. I signaled to Ellie's grandmother to come sit with us - there were four of them. So they completed the table. I had

The watermelon was good but the soup was too big a serving. I forgot to ask for the sorbet as I thought everyone would get that. My granddaughter had that. Then since I had beef last night we had the Sea bream Fillet with goat cheese

and for dessert we had

They gave us a plate of Petit Fours for the table to share, but they were all stuck to the plate. So you would take one and would only get the top part of it. They were good even so.

Lying Along Lyon

It is still hot

View 2019 Paris - Provence - Barcelona on greatgrandmaR's travel map.

This morning I thought I might get up at 6 and do the core workout on the Sun deck, but I didn't. We did finally get down to breakfast (the elevator took me all the way down today) at 7:30. As on the AmaViola, the breakfast is a buffet,Breakfast buffet from my POV on the scooter - over my head

I decided not to do the walking tour today - even the easy one - because we were to walk to the bus and there were steps, and I was really not that interested in seeing Lyon and it was going to be hot. A went on the tour A.'s tour report

I thought I would go and swim instead. Or at least I could do some of my water exercises that I do at home. These are exercises which keep my joints supple without the pain that walking on land causes.

To get to the Sun Deck, I had to go down to reception

and then walk up the stairs. I went up to the Sun Deck to find the pool. On the AmaViola there was a nice pool and I thought all the AmaWaterway boats had them. I walked the length of the boat and there was no pool. I walked back the length of the boat. There was only a small hot tub - 4-5 feet wide. I got in. It was hot, but not too hot. But I was doing no exercises in the hot tub. Boo.

I got out and sat under an umbrella in the shade and enjoyed the breeze.

There was a Tauck boat, the Emerald Princess (102 pax) rafted on us and they were trying to figure out how to get their bikes off.

So there was an announcement - we were letting them get next to the dock so they could get their bikes off. They unrafted from us and we pulled away from the dock. I went to look over the side - ducks and trash in the water.

I went down and changed out of my suit. It got to be time for lunch. A wasn't back from the tour yet. I went on down to eat - it was cheese day. The waiters gave me a plate of cheese and a baguette, and they also gave me some salami and some olives.

A got back after 1:30 from the tour and said she was sweaty and would go take a dip in the pool. I texted her there was no pool. So she showered and arrived just before the end of lunch while I was eating my

I arrived early at the 4:30 appointment with Alex, the workout guy, and I waited in the hall. I took a photo Looking through the door to the Chef's Table

which is also at that end of the hall. I talked to Alex and he gave me a private session and worked out some things I could do. I have gained some weight which I think based on past trips is mostly water weight- my ankles had swelled while I was in Paris.

A was pretty much asleep for the afternoon. At dinner, our friends from the previous night were at a table with a single lady so there was not room for us. We had beef carpaccio, spinach cream soup (not as good as mothers- I only ate a little of it). I had the Herb Crusted Pork Tenderloin

and A had

and then she had the banana split (which was just ice cream in a cup) and I had the Mousse au chocolate blanc

which was just a little cup of white chocolate mousse.

Tomorrow we go down the Saône to Collonges-au-Mout d'Or on the Saône. We arrive at 11:00. At 1:30, the tour to the town and the winery leaves, and the ship turns around and goes back to Lyon. The excursion returns to Lyon to meet the ship. I do not drink any alcohol and A does not think that she likes wine (based on what she tried it at the cabaret), so I think we will skip this excursion.

We were watching the Women's World Cup which is partly in German. The USA won.

Up and Down the Rivers

The first two Trips

View 2019 Paris - Provence - Barcelona on greatgrandmaR's travel map.

Today we have four different cruises. First, early this morning, they are moving to a different docking location. Second we are cruising up the Saône to Collonges-au-Mout d'Or on the Saône. We arrive at 11:00. At 1:30, the tour to the town and the winery leaves, and the ship turns around and goes back to Lyon. The excursion returns to Lyon to meet the ship. After we have retrieved the wine tasting people, we speed down to Vienne. I want to take as many photos as I can of these trips. I could just stay in the cabin, but that would mean I would only get one side of the river, and would not be able to see what is going on in front of the ship. Since the bow camera is not working and I can't see if we are coming into a lock, that means that I have to actually go and sit on the bow. Which would be OK except for the heat

A woke me up at 6, and I got dressed and went up to the Lounge and out on the bow to see us move the boat to a different location in Lyon. We were the middle of a boat raft sandwich. The Tauck boat was on the shore, then us, and on the outside of us another ship called Camargue. They had to move first,

I took some photos of them putting the gangplank in place at Collonges-au-Mout d'Or - it was a two piece gangplank. One was on the bank and the other was across from the ship to that other gangplank.

The second part of the trip

A's report of her day on board

After lunch, I went back to the bow to take photos of the trip back down the river that I missed on the way up. It was very hot by this time even in the shade. I watched as they left the pier - the forward line was way out of reach of the crewman, and he had to flip it off of the bollard.

But before we got back to the dock in Lyon it was too hot to be out there anymore, so I came in.

We didn't realize that dinner tonight was put back from 7:00 to 7:30 so we got ready and went down at about 7:20. The elevator on this ship drops me off INSIDE the restaurant, so A was outside and I was inside before the restaurant opened. One of the waiters asked me why I was hiding.

When we got back to our room, A was having trouble with the computer mouse which said it was discharged and neither it nor the remote would work. The night concierge guy came and he tried to boot up the computer but it took him a long time. The bow camera still does not work. I have asked about it multiple times, but it apparently is not important enough for them to fix it. This is a significant disappointment for me as the bow camera (when it works) is great for seeing when we are coming into a lock or for giving notice of other important viewpoints.

Locking Down the Rhone

From Vienne To Touron

View 2019 Paris - Provence - Barcelona on greatgrandmaR's travel map.

Today was to be a walking tour of Vienne and A was going on a hike.
A's Hike
It was still hot. I took the elevator down to breakfast, and it would not let me out. So I made the mistake of going up to deck 2 where the reception desk is and walking down two floors. It was very painful. I had a small waffle, some scrambled eggs and hash browns. Then I had to get back up to deck 2. I took a photo from deck two of the castle type structure across the river. Our side of the boat is against the dock and that is a road and less picturesque.

A went on her hike, and I decided to save my energy and not to go on the walk. She said that this excursion, which was a guided hike to the monastery at Mount Pipet, was her favorite.

When I went down to lunch, the elevator still did not work so I went down to deck 1 this time and walked down one flight.

I talked to the couple at lunch and found out for the first time how the Jazz Cruise thing works. The people in the Jazz group pay for a group of performers to play for them. They pay for the cruise for the performers and when those people play, it is supposed to be just for the Jazz group, as they have paid extra for the fares for those performers. I had thought that all the people in the group were themselves performers (some of them are also performers) and that they would perform. That isn't so - they are the audience.

I was hoping to get a photo of the locking procedure from the bow, so I went out there. I did get a chair in the shade, but it was hot.

The internet was very very slow. I made a list for Dragan of the things I wanted to see in the Avignon region.

A was sleeping, and eventually the internet was so slow that I took a nap too. When I went to dinner, I found that we could use the elevator down to the restaurant but they had to open the door from the restaurant because the magnetic lock which is supposed to keep you inside until the elevator gets to the floor does not let you out. So they have to open it manually.
