Up and Down the Rivers

The first two Trips

View 2019 Paris - Provence - Barcelona on greatgrandmaR's travel map.

Today we have four different cruises. First, early this morning, they are moving to a different docking location. Second we are cruising up the Saône to Collonges-au-Mout d'Or on the Saône. We arrive at 11:00. At 1:30, the tour to the town and the winery leaves, and the ship turns around and goes back to Lyon. The excursion returns to Lyon to meet the ship. After we have retrieved the wine tasting people, we speed down to Vienne. I want to take as many photos as I can of these trips. I could just stay in the cabin, but that would mean I would only get one side of the river, and would not be able to see what is going on in front of the ship. Since the bow camera is not working and I can't see if we are coming into a lock, that means that I have to actually go and sit on the bow. Which would be OK except for the heat

A woke me up at 6, and I got dressed and went up to the Lounge and out on the bow to see us move the boat to a different location in Lyon. We were the middle of a boat raft sandwich. The Tauck boat was on the shore, then us, and on the outside of us another ship called Camargue. They had to move first,

and then we also cast off.

I took about 100 photos of Lyon from the river. I saw a sign on one of the bridges that said "Pollution, Restriction de Circulation".

It was warm, but still reasonable and there was a breeze. I saw some swans,

We went into the Saune River and on the point there was a sign that said ONLY LYON and the O in Lyon was a soccer ball. In front of it was a thing in the shape of a hashtag with the words "Lyon 2019 European Capital of Smart Tourism".

Then I went to breakfast. I had a hard boiled egg (the shell stuck to it), some grilled vegetables, scrambled eggs and some raisin bread.

I went back out on the deck at 9, but by this time there were no chairs so I sat down on the deck and took a few more photos.

Then it got too hot and I had to go in. I couldn't get up from the deck by myself, I had have help from more than one person. I went inside about 9:40 to hear the end of Dragan's talk on the excursions.

I took some photos of them putting the gangplank in place at Collonges-au-Mout d'Or - it was a two piece gangplank. One was on the bank and the other was across from the ship to that other gangplank.

I enjoyed looking through your fine photos of Lyon, taken from the ship. If by any chance you would like to read about my take on the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière, you can find it here: https://operasandcycling.com/basilica-notre-dame-de-fourviere/

by Nemorino

That was interesting and I was happy to know about the mini Eiffel tower. The Basilica reminds me for some reason of the Pope's palace in Avignon.
